Barbados' relationship with hurricane-resistant building has deep roots. Even the earliest formalized regional attempt at this — the Caribbean Uniform Building Code, developed with UN and regional partners partly out of work based in Barbados — came directly out of the recognition that the Caribbean “cannot afford disasters,” in the words of the engineers who wrote the comparative building codes report that shaped CUBiC. That work is now decades old, and it's still the regional foundation, even in places, like Barbados, that haven't made it law.

The physics haven't gotten kinder since then. Storm intensity across the wider Caribbean and Atlantic basin has been trending toward faster intensification and more frequent Category 4 and 5 systems in recent decades. Genuinely hurricane-resistant design in this environment now means engineering for sustained winds well north of what older assumptions were built around, with gust resistance extending further still.

What that looks like on a real project: continuous load paths from roof to foundation, so wind uplift forces have nowhere to find a weak connection. Impact-rated glazing or storm shutters on every opening, not just the ones facing the prevailing wind — storms don't always arrive from the direction you'd expect. Roof geometry that sheds wind rather than catching it, a principle the chattel house builders understood with a hand saw and no engineering degree. And a structural approach that treats the building envelope as one connected system, rather than a roof, walls, and foundation designed by three different mental models.

I also design with the understanding that Barbados' own building regulation framework is still catching up to where the engineering already is — our national wind load standard, BNS CP28, was developed from CUBiC's wind provisions back in the 1980s, and there's been an ongoing, public call from our own engineering community for an updated, mandatory code. Until that changes, the responsibility sits with the architects and engineers doing the specifying, not the regulator. I take that seriously on every roofline I draw.

The honest goal isn't to build a house that survived the last storm. It's to build one engineered against the standard, so the next one — whatever category it arrives as — is a non-event rather than a reconstruction project.
